Mission Statement Senior Citizens Legal Services (SCLS) opened its first office in 1972 because the elderly were unable to obtain legal aid services that addressed their unique problems. Senior community activists believed that the elderly needed and deserved a program designed to meet their special needs. The office quickly became a model project for the creation of hundreds of similar law offices for older people throughout the country. For 40 years, SCLS has worked to develop expertise in legal problems that relate to aging.
Volunteer Duties Volunteer duties include, interviewing clients, reporting on interviews at Legal Staff Meetings, counseling clients after consultation with Staff Attorney, contacting governmental agencies to investigate legal problems, writing letters on behalf of clients, drafting legal documents, and negotiating settlements. All of the above must be done under the Supervision of an Attorney. In addition, Seniors Citizen Legal Services is looking for help working on their website to provide online legal information. Types of work assigned vary depending on the skill and interest level of the student. Internship Opportunities are also available for pre-law, 1L, and 2L student.
